“TRICK OF THE LIGHT” TODAY

Acclaimed Guitarist/Singer-Songwriter Featured by People.com,

Named In Folk Alley’s Best New Folk Music

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 15, 2024) - Critically-acclaimed Guitarist/Singer-Songwriter John Smith’s new album The Living Kind (Thirty Tigers/Commoner Records) is out today alongside new single “Trick Of The Light.” Named to Folk Alley’s ‘Best New Folk Music’ and featured by People.com, Carter Vintage Guitars, Holler, Marty Music and more, The Living Kind is a glorious and contemporary body of work about putting life’s challenges into perspective, and highlights John’s generational guitar talent and unique synthesis of style. The Living Kind is available at digital retailers everywhere, here: https://orcd.co/thelivingkind.

Today, John is also sharing an intimate live performance of his new single “Trick Of The Light,” which explores stages of grief and self-doubt, and was written by John about cautiously emerging from dark times, looking for the truth and regaining gratitude for life. View the intimate live performance of the new single filmed at Cooper Hall in the UK here: https://youtu.be/2QtlfihFMpo

As John explains, the album is about “responsibility and being keenly aware of your place within a family dynamic. When I started writing these songs, I knew immediately what was happening; in the space of three years, I had essentially become a different person and had a lot more to deal with. I wrote the songs just as we were beginning to rebuild our lives. They are about changing for the better in the face of loss. Celebrating the good things and facing up to the bad. Staying positive, trying to keep an eye on the centre, holding on to those we love and working towards a better future.”

The Living Kind is the first body of new music since his sixth studio album The Fray, which helped him amass over 100 million streams on Spotify and led him to a UK Americana Award nomination for Artist of The Year (2022) and UK Song of the Year (2022) for his single “Eye to Eye” (John Smith ft. Sarah Jarosz). Produced by Joe Henry (Lisa Hannigan, Rhiannon Giddens, Guy Pearce, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez), The Living Kind is a gloriously subtle and moving 10 track collection that is a truly contemporary body of work.

The Living Kind was recorded entirely live at Joe Henry’s home in Maine. The idea for the album was first cooked up at the start of 2022, when Joe and John decided to make an intimate record together – “an acoustic album that sounded like Spirit of Eden”, Smith explains, referencing Talk Talk’s 1988 classic. Along with John Martyn’s Solid Air and Joni Mitchell’s electro-acoustic odyssey Hejira, it was one of the three creative inspirations for The Living Kind. John’s new single “Trick Of The Light” follows his previously-released songs “Candle” hailed as “breathtaking” by People.com, his title track “The Living Kind” with the official music video (HERE) and “The World Turns.” John is currently on his headlining tour in the UK. “Trick Of The Light” is slated as the fourth single to be shared with the album this Friday. Exploring stages of grief and self-doubt, the song was written by John about cautiously emerging from dark times, looking for the truth and regaining gratitude for life. The song follows John’s previously released single “Candle” which was hailed as “breathtaking” (People.com) along with his title track “The Living Kind” and “The World Turns.” All four songs are included on his forthcoming album.

The Living Kind was recorded entirely live in Maine and produced by Joe Henry (Lisa Hannigan, Rhiannon Giddens, Guy Pearce, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez), with the majority of the songs written on a 1963 Martin 00-18 and 2022 Mulecaster steel guitar.

John joined YouTube Influencer Marty Music to discuss more about his guitar techniques on the new album and his handmade Mule Mulecaster steel guitar sharing, “I discovered them [Mule Guitars] having heard a friend playing one of the resophonic guitars. One day after developing a friendship, the founder sent me one of his Mavis guitars, which are a thin line resophonic guitar and it blew me away…it really suits songwriting. Over half of the new record was written on this.” View more (HERE)

The Living Kind follows John’s previously released album The Fray, which garnered him 110 million streams on Spotify alone and led him to a UK Americana Award nomination for Artist of The Year (2022) and Song of The Year (2022) for his single “Eye to Eye” (John Smith ft. Sarah Jarosz).

Named as “the future of Folk music” by some of the Folk greats including John Martyn, Davey Graham and John Renbourn, John’s music has been featured by Associated Press, No Depression, American Songwriter, Billboard, Acoustic Guitar, The Guardian and more. John recently performed a showcase at Folk Alliance International. He will be kicking off his headlining tour in the UK in April. “Candle” Lyrics

It took me a while to see the change

Though it appeared as if from nowhere

I hadn’t a way to recognise it

Knew not of the cross we had to bear

Are you setting a fire, my loving vandal

I see you are heading for a fall

What if it’s more than you can handle

All the light spills on the table

And you’re burning out

You’re burning like a candle

There are days when I find it easy

And there are days I don’t find at all

When I reach for the hands that held me

And they’re waving at me as I fall

Wearing the burden like a saddle

The weight of the world and nothing more

What if it’s more than you can handle

All the light spills on the table

And you’re burning out

You’re burning like a candle

If I could let the world surround me

Find a way to share the load

Maybe it’s more than I can handle

All the light spills on the table

And I’m burning out

I’m burning like a candle

Nashville, TN (Feb. 7th, 2024) - Critically-acclaimed Singer-songwriter/Guitarist John Smith is sharing the music video for title track “The Living Kind” today. “The Living Kind” is from John’s forthcoming album The Living Kind (Thirty Tigers/Commoner Records) set for release on March 15th. The Living Kind is the first body of new music since his sixth studio album The Fray, which helped him amass over 100 million streams on Spotify. “The Living Kind” music video was filmed in the woods near his home in Somerset and is a lighthearted, surreal take on living life to the fullest. Watch the official music video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoKz1CIHTLA&feature=youtu.be

“It’s hard to get out of bed sometimes, and most days it’s almost impossible to see things clearly. Since I turned 40, I’ve felt that I’m starting to run out of time… but I’ve still got a lot of work to do. I wrote this song as a marker on the map. It’s good to want to be The Living Kind,” said John.

Of his picking style, he added “I listen to a lot of Metallica. James Hetfield is one of my favorite guitarists. I took his ‘down down up’ picking style and put it to a three-time jig feel.”

ABOUT JOHN SMITH

Steeped in the lineage of British folk and American guitar music, taking his cue from Richard Thompson, John Martyn and Ry Cooder, John has evolved a transatlantic blend of guitar techniques. Sometimes using a slide, sometimes with guitar on his lap, sometimes detuning mid-song or pulling subtle expressions out of an array of effect pedals, Smith’s obsession with the instrument has made a master of him. His deeply romantic and vivid songwriting, combined with his innovative guitar work, have won him a loyal following and amassed over 110 million streams on Spotify alone.
His career began opening for folk greats including John Martyn, Davy Graham and John Renbourn, who called him “the future of folk music.”  He has since opened for Iron and Wine, Patty Griffin and Ben Howard, and guested with artists such as Jackson Browne, Martin Carthy, Roseanne Cash, Gomez, Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker, Jerry Douglas, Glen Hansard and Rodney Crowell. In his occasional role as sideman, he has played guitar for artists as diverse as David Gray, Lisa Hannigan, Lianne La Havas, Joe Henry and Joan Baez.
