JOHN SMITH RELEASES ALBUM THE LIVING KIND ALONGSIDE
NEW SINGLE AND LIVE PERFORMANCE OF
“TRICK OF THE LIGHT” TODAY

Acclaimed Guitarist/Singer-Songwriter Featured by People.com,
Carter Vintage Guitars, Holler and Marty Music

Named In Folk Alley’s Best New Folk Music

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 15, 2024) - Critically-acclaimed Guitarist/Singer-Songwriter John Smith’s new album The Living Kind (Thirty Tigers/Commoner Records) is out today alongside new single “Trick Of The Light.” Named to Folk Alley’s ‘Best New Folk Music’ and featured by People.com, Carter Vintage Guitars, Holler, Marty Music and more, The Living Kind is a glorious and contemporary body of work about putting life’s challenges into perspective, and highlights John’s generational guitar talent and unique synthesis of style. The Living Kind is available at digital retailers everywhere, here: https://orcd.co/thelivingkind.

Today, John is also sharing an intimate live performance of his new single “Trick Of The Light,” which explores stages of grief and self-doubt, and was written by John about cautiously emerging from dark times, looking for the truth and regaining gratitude for life. View the intimate live performance of the new single filmed at Cooper Hall in the UK here: https://youtu.be/2QtlfihFMpo

As John explains, the album is about “responsibility and being keenly aware of your place within a family dynamic. When I started writing these songs, I knew immediately what was happening; in the space of three years, I had essentially become a different person and had a lot more to deal with. I wrote the songs just as we were beginning to rebuild our lives. They are about changing for the better in the face of loss. Celebrating the good things and facing up to the bad. Staying positive, trying to keep an eye on the centre, holding on to those we love and working towards a better future.”

The Living Kind is the first body of new music since his sixth studio album The Fray, which helped him amass over 100 million streams on Spotify and led him to a UK Americana Award nomination for Artist of The Year (2022) and UK Song of the Year (2022) for his single “Eye to Eye” (John Smith ft. Sarah Jarosz). Produced by Joe Henry (Lisa Hannigan, Rhiannon Giddens, Guy Pearce, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez), The Living Kind is a gloriously subtle and moving 10 track collection that is a truly contemporary body of work.

The Living Kind was recorded entirely live at Joe Henry’s home in Maine. The idea for the album was first cooked up at the start of 2022, when Joe and John decided to make an intimate record together – “an acoustic album that sounded like Spirit of Eden”, Smith explains, referencing Talk Talk’s 1988 classic. Along with John Martyn’s Solid Air and Joni Mitchell’s electro-acoustic odyssey Hejira, it was one of the three creative inspirations for The Living Kind. John’s new single “Trick Of The Light” follows his previously-released songs “Candle” hailed as “breathtaking” by People.com, his title track “The Living Kind” with the official music video (HERE) and “The World Turns.” John is currently on his headlining tour in the UK. “Trick Of The Light” is slated as the fourth single to be shared with the album this Friday. Exploring stages of grief and self-doubt, the song was written by John about cautiously emerging from dark times, looking for the truth and regaining gratitude for life. The song follows John’s previously released single “Candle” which was hailed as “breathtaking” (People.com) along with his title track “The Living Kind” and “The World Turns.” All four songs are included on his forthcoming album.

The Living Kind was recorded entirely live in Maine and produced by Joe Henry (Lisa Hannigan, Rhiannon Giddens, Guy Pearce, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez), with the majority of the songs written on a 1963 Martin 00-18 and 2022 Mulecaster steel guitar.

John joined YouTube Influencer Marty Music to discuss more about his guitar techniques on the new album and his handmade Mule Mulecaster steel guitar sharing, “I discovered them [Mule Guitars] having heard a friend playing one of the resophonic guitars. One day after developing a friendship, the founder sent me one of his Mavis guitars, which are a thin line resophonic guitar and it blew me away…it really suits songwriting. Over half of the new record was written on this.” View more (HERE)

The Living Kind follows John’s previously released album The Fray, which garnered him 110 million streams on Spotify alone and led him to a UK Americana Award nomination for Artist of The Year (2022) and Song of The Year (2022) for his single “Eye to Eye” (John Smith ft. Sarah Jarosz).

Named as “the future of Folk music” by some of the Folk greats including John Martyn, Davey Graham and John Renbourn, John’s music has been featured by Associated Press, No Depression, American Songwriter, Billboard, Acoustic Guitar, The Guardian and more. John recently performed a showcase at Folk Alliance International. He will be kicking off his headlining tour in the UK in April. “Candle” Lyrics

It took me a while to see the change

Though it appeared as if from nowhere

I hadn’t a way to recognise it

Knew not of the cross we had to bear

Are you setting a fire, my loving vandal

I see you are heading for a fall

What if it’s more than you can handle

All the light spills on the table

And you’re burning out

You’re burning like a candle

There are days when I find it easy

And there are days I don’t find at all

When I reach for the hands that held me

And they’re waving at me as I fall

Wearing the burden like a saddle

The weight of the world and nothing more

What if it’s more than you can handle

All the light spills on the table

And you’re burning out

You’re burning like a candle

If I could let the world surround me

Find a way to share the load

Maybe it’s more than I can handle

All the light spills on the table

And I’m burning out

I’m burning like a candle

Nashville, TN (Feb. 7th, 2024) - Critically-acclaimed Singer-songwriter/Guitarist John Smith is sharing the music video for title track “The Living Kind” today. “The Living Kind” is from John’s forthcoming album The Living Kind (Thirty Tigers/Commoner Records) set for release on March 15th. The Living Kind is the first body of new music since his sixth studio album The Fray, which helped him amass over 100 million streams on Spotify. “The Living Kind” music video was filmed in the woods near his home in Somerset and is a lighthearted, surreal take on living life to the fullest. Watch the official music video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoKz1CIHTLA&feature=youtu.be

“It’s hard to get out of bed sometimes, and most days it’s almost impossible to see things clearly. ABOUT JOHN SMITH

Steeped in the lineage of British folk and American guitar music, taking his cue from Richard Thompson, John Martyn and Ry Cooder, John has evolved a transatlantic blend of guitar techniques. Sometimes using a slide, sometimes with guitar on his lap, sometimes detuning mid-song or pulling subtle expressions out of an array of effect pedals, Smith’s obsession with the instrument has made a master of him. His deeply romantic and vivid songwriting, combined with his innovative guitar work, have won him a loyal following and amassed over 110 million streams on Spotify alone.
His career began opening for folk greats including John Martyn, Davy Graham and John Renbourn, who called him “the future of folk music.”  He has since opened for Iron and Wine, Patty Griffin and Ben Howard, and guested with artists such as Jackson Browne, Martin Carthy, Roseanne Cash, Gomez, Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker, Jerry Douglas, Glen Hansard and Rodney Crowell. In his occasional role as sideman, he has played guitar for artists as diverse as David Gray, Lisa Hannigan, Lianne La Havas, Joe Henry and Joan Baez.

—Nick Russo (MD) KIKK & KILT/Houston, TX

“GREAT SONG! We’re adding Mike Ryan ‘Way it Goes’ out-of-the-box this Monday!”—Neil Wieland (PD) KAIR/Atchison, KS

“Love Mike’s new single! Reporting ‘Way It Goes’ as an ADD now!”
—Austin Daniels (PD) KFTX/Corpus Christi, TX

“That’s the way it goes when you have a hit song!”
—Josh Fuller (MD) KVST/Conroe, TX

As a respected songwriter himself, Mike’s craft has garnered over 320 million career streams and has led to collaborations with artists such as Brad Paisley and Brandy Clark.

With his new music Mike opened the door to contributions from a roster of top-shelf songwriters, sharing “Brett Sheroky has written some really cool songs and this one [‘Way It Goes’] was written by him, Andrew Peebles and Phil Vassar, so it got my attention really quickly. Phil is absolutely a legend so having a chance to cut one of his songs was a really cool thing for me.”

Packing a punch with this radio-ready track, Mike also teamed up with producers Bart Butler (Randall King, Jon Pardi) and Ryan Gore (Jon Pardi, Midland) for the first time.

“Bart brought in some new players and different elements that I just thought were really crucial in making this album [Longcut] sound as good as it does. This was my first time expanding with additional producers including Brent [Anderson]. With songs like “Way It Goes” and other up-tempo tracks on the album there’s definitely a different edge and intensity,” he added.

The Billboard Top 40 artist has toured relentlessly, opening for some of the biggest names in the business, including Miranda Lambert, Hardy and Morgan Wallen, in addition to selling out his own headlining gigs. At times, even selling more tickets than major label acts with top ten singles. Mike performed his first-ever stadium show at Globe Life Field with Wallen, marking the venue’s fastest sellout.

Mike recently wrapped select tour stops with Jordan Davis. He is currently touring nationwide and will perform at Nashville’s Exit/In on Thursday, Jan. 25th. Doors open at 7 p.m. Opening artist Will Jones performs at 8 p.m and Mike’s full-band set starts at 9 p.m.  For a full list of tour dates and more information, visit https://mikeryanband.com/.

KIT PLUGINS AND BLACKBIRD STUDIO COLLABORATE TO BRING THE SOUND OF AN ICONIC API LEGACY CONSOLE TO DAWS WITH THE RELEASE OFTHE BB A5 CHANNEL STRIP PLUG-IN

KIT’S BB A5 IS MODELED AFTER TWO HIGHLY-SOUGHT OUT API LEGACY CONSOLES IN BLACKBIRD STUDIO B AND D

BB A5 FEATURES THE SOUND OF THE API 212L PREAMP AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THREE COVETED EQ’S FROM THE CONSOLES KNOWN FOR COUNTLESS CHART-TOPPING RECORDS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 28, 2023) - KIT Plugins and Blackbird Studio are bringing the sound of an iconic API Legacy console to DAWs everywhere with the release of BB A5, the channel strip plug-in modeled after two highly-sought out consoles in Blackbird Studio B and D. The API Legacy consoles are known as some of the best-sounding consoles to be used in a commercial studio and for countless chart-topping records. Delivered with sonic precision, the BB A5 captures the tone of the 212L preamp and characteristics from three of the most coveted API EQ’s including the iconic three-band 550A, the four-band 550L and the proportional Q-based graphic equalizer 560L. Creators can now access the same sounds used on countless hit songs today starting with a limited-time introductory price of $150, by visiting https://kitplugins.com/products/bb-a5.

With careful consideration and a thorough analysis, KIT’s team collaborated closely with Blackbird Studio Owner John McBride to capture the essence of the API 212L saturation, and the nuances of the console’s EQ’s, analog hum and the character of the master buss.

"The API Legacy is a major part of Blackbird. It was important that the BB A5 capture the sound and vibe of the hardware as a whole, not just one of the channels. My first experience with the plug-in was shooting it out with the real thing and I was ecstatic with how close it was. The BB A5 replicates the feel of the desks in Studio B and D beautifully," said John McBride, Owner, Blackbird Studio.

"The BB A5 is the largest project we have taken on yet. It was paramount that we deliver a product that lives up to the sonic reputation of our other products and still capture the feel of the original hardware. My team and I worked tirelessly hand in hand with John and Blackbird for over a year to create this plug-in. I couldn’t be happier with the result as the A5 is already a mainstay in my mixing toolbox,” said Matthew Kleinman, Founder of KIT Plugins.

Already gaining popularity among music creators, producers and audio engineers are welcoming the meticulously crafted emulation lauding;

“The A5 is a very welcome addition to my own mixing. All 3 of the classic eq styles in one plug-in with easy access hi/lo pass filters is a big deal to me. Add the mic pre “weight” to that and you can’t go wrong.”
- Joe Carrell, 11X GRAMMY-nominated Audio Engineer

“I immediately go to the kick and take away a little 500 and add a little 63. I’ve always loved the API Legacy console and this plugin replicates it beautifully. It sounds like I’m in D!”
- Steve Marcantonio, GRAMMY-winning Producer and Recording Engineer

“It’s absolutely gorgeous sounding. The first plugin, in my opinion, to nail the proper API sound.”
-Joseph J. Chudyk, Multi-Platinum Mixer (IDK, Kane Brown, The Band CAMINO)

The BB A5 plug-in will also be added to KIT’s Blackbird Studio Bundle which includes the 7-band BB Mo-Q (used in Martina McBride’s vocal chain), the award-winning BB N105 channel strip plug-in and the BB N73 their recently released 1073 emulation.
